Seriously though, do we really have to wait until a Justice League film, or Man of Steel 3, or whatever, to see Wonder Woman on film? She is one of the most iconic characters in comics, yet can’t get a film green lit? I don’t buy it. I really don’t.
Diane Nelson, president of DC Entertainment, when asked why WW has no film on the way, was just quoted as saying:
The reasons why are probably pretty subjective: She doesn’t have the single, clear, compelling story that everyone knows and recognizes.
That’s a pretty lame reason, and also not true at all. Her story summarized: She is an Amazon champion/warrior who leaves her home in order to save the world of man from themselves. Has the story changed over the years? Yes, but right there you have a simple concept to build a three act structure on.
What if that “compelling” reason already exists? How about this alternate idea for Man of Steel 2: Wonder Woman leaves Themyscira because she is the only one capable of stopping this “Superman” who just destroyed a small town and a large city. Special effects, misunderstandings, moral lessons, Lex Luthor, and Steve Trevor. Boom: Superman/Wonder Woman makes a billion plus dollars.
There, you’ve got a Wonder Woman movie.
Now, I’m excited to see Batman and Superman side by side in a movie. But I would trade that in a heart beat to finally see Wonder Woman have her chance to shine.
In closing: I’m happy that Batman/Superman is happening, but DC Entertainment missed an opportunity to make it a Wonder Woman/Superman movie. I hope they correct the ship by putting WW in her own film before moving forward with a JLA film.
